As we count down and prepare to celebrate America’s landmark 250th anniversary, the SCFRW is looking back at the incredible women who built the very bedrock of our state. Long before the first shots of the American Revolution were fired, the spirit of fierce independence and visionary leadership was already thriving in the hearts of women; and there is no greater example than Elizabeth “Eliza” Lucas Pinckney.

At just sixteen years old, Eliza was left with the responsibility of managing three of her family’s Lowcountry plantations. Rather than just maintaining the status quo, she looked to the future. Through years of relentless trial, error, and determination, she successfully cultivated and processed indigo. By sharing her seeds and knowledge with neighboring planters, this teenage girl established South Carolina’s second largest cash crop, bringing immense economic strength to the colony; wealth that would later help fund the fight for American liberty.

Eliza’s impact on our nation only deepened with the next generation. She raised two sons, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney and Thomas Pinckney, who grew up to become pivotal Revolutionary War leaders, diplomats, and signers of the United States Constitution. Her lifelong contribution to the birth of America was so deeply revered that when she passed away in 1793, President George Washington himself requested to serve as a pallbearer at her funeral.

Eliza Lucas Pinckney proved early on that South Carolina women do not simply witness history; we shape it. That exact same blueprint of action is alive and well today in the incredible work being done by the ladies of the SCFRW. Just as Eliza looked at her community, saw a need, and dug her hands into the soil to build a stronger future, our members are on the ground right now doing the heavy lifting for our state. From dedicating ourselves to local community service programs, to organizing grassroots campaigns, registering voters, and championing policies that protect our families, modern Republican women are cultivating the next generation of freedom.
